Dr Peggy Kern is a senior lecturer at the Centre for Positive Psychology at the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education. Her research is collaborative in nature and draws on a variety of methodologies, including big data, integrative data analysis, and mixed methods to examine questions around who thrives in life and why, including: (a) understanding and measuring healthy functioning, (b) identifying individual and social factors impacting life trajectories, and (c) systems informed approaches to wellbeing. Strategic Approaches to Positive Education:
    The Value of Measurement

Over the past decade, positive education has increasingly gained momentum globally. Programs, curriculum, and interventions have been developed to support student and staff character, wellbeing, resilience, social and emotional regulation, and other non-cognitive skills. But how do we know whether our efforts are beneficial? Measurement and evaluation play an important role in understanding the wellbeing of the educational community, monitoring change over time, and identifying which programs and practices are most effective. A growing range of tools and approaches are available, ranging from small scale observations and self-report surveys to large scale big data approaches. Dr. Kern will highlight the value of measurement, illustrate several approaches, and identify issues and challenges to consider.

Wellbeing Measurement in Schools: Using Data to Inform Practice

There is growing interest in building wellbeing in schools, ranging from single interventions within a classroom to carefully designed whole school approaches to change. Measurement and evaluation play an important role in understanding the wellbeing of the educational community, monitoring change over time, and identifying which programs and practices are most effective. This workshop will explore a range of tools and approaches for incorporating measurement into positive education efforts, propose a series of questions to consider, and provide practical ways of using data to inform decision making and implementation.
